Question authentication & file sharing using pure-ftpd & suse 9.0

I've read the docs on but the default install of pureftpd on suse 9.0 seems to be customized to be setup for ease of use by having /etc/pure-ftpd.conf to configure the server instead of the command line switches outlined in the pure-ftpd README files.

I tried disabling pam authentication in pure-ftpd.conf but the users I'm adding to pure-ftpd don't seem to be working. When I create a system account using Yast, then those accounts have ftp access but I want to setup the server the way the pureftpd README describes to add users to /etc/pureftpd.passwd. For instance to add a user I would type:

# pure-pw useradd dopper -u ftpuser -d /home/ftp/uploads/dopper

That does add the user to /etc/pure-ftpd.passwd but it doesn't allow the user to login. There must be something I need to configure to make it use that password list instead of system users. Any ideas?

Hi, got the same problem here, but I'm using webmin to try and configure pureftpd. However, users don't seem to work. Shoot.

I'm really annoyed by this, I simply want the system users to have access to their homes! That was working perfectly with proftpd when I was on fedora core 1, but I couldn't find any RPM for suse!
