Audio Permission Problems

I just installed and gentoo and have been setting up all the software and drivers but ive hit a problem i setup alsa and teseted using speaker-test under root at the time. but now when I try it under a normal user I get this
Code:
bash-2.05b$ speaker-test

speaker-test 1.0.8

Playback device is plughw:0,0
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Sine wave rate is 440.0000Hz
Playback open error: Permission denied
does anybody know how to fix this
I already tried adding the user to the audio group and making all the audio related dev files belong to the audio group and still no luck

check the permissions of the sound devices. The alsa ones are in /dev/snd.

Chances are, it's pam messing up with the permissions. Take a look at
/etc/security/console.perms
There's probably a line that says:

<console> 0600 <sound> 0600 root.audio

Change the 0600 to 0660. Or comment out the line. Even better, comment out every line of the file, especially if you are using udev.

I got so annoyed with pam changing the permissions of my device files that I commented out all the lines. It makes no sense to have pam deal with the device file permissions since udev can handle the permissions and pam just gets in the way.
