httpd is apache as far as i know, apache service is probably the user name that apache runs as

at terminal prompt
$ps -ef | grep apache should return something like
Code:
apache 2942 2923 0 14:36 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2943 2923 0 14:36 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2944 2923 0 14:36 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2945 2923 0 14:36 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2946 2923 0 14:36 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2947 2923 0 14:36 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2948 2923 0 14:36 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
apache 2949 2923 0 14:36 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/httpd
root 3957 3618 0 15:06 pts/0 00:00:00 grep apache
the user apache (or something similar like www-data) is a virtual useer created by linux so that the web server is only given the priveleges necessary to do it's job and nothing more so if apache is compromised the rest of the machine isn't
