Apache PHP5 module won't work after Mandriva 2006 upgrade

I can't get the Apache PHP5 module to work after I upgraded from LE2005 to Mandriva 2006. The 70_mod_php.conf is properly installed under /etc/httpd/conf.d and the module binaries are also where they should be. I also tried to activate it from Webmin, but every time I return to the module configuration page it display the module as inactive. What seems to be the problem?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Minor correction: The 70_mod_php.conf is installed under /etc/httpd/modules.d
Apache version is 2.0.54.

I found the source of the error in the 70_mod_php.conf file:

<IfDefine HAVE_PHP5>
...Load the module
</IfDefine>

If the HAVE_PHP5 parameter is not defined during startup (e.g. httpd -DHAVE_PHP5) it will not load the module. Why is this parameter not defined during startup? Where can it be setup so that it boots with this parameter set?

My simple current workaround is of course to comment out or remove the <IfDefine HAVE_PHP5>-condition entirely. This solves my issue, but it doesn't feel like the most elegant solution.

If someone has a more elegant idea then please let me know.
