Apache httpd service not recognized

I have Apache 2.0.46 installed from source
on to directory /usr/local/apache

everything works so far, PHP, MySQL.
localhost, myipaddress: 192.168.0.5, and 127.0.0.1
all work fine. My router is also set to point to my ip as
virtual host.

but I can't contact my server from the outside. Even from another
computer on my network, and point directly to my ip. So I know it's not
the router.

What I don't understand is why the server isn't recongnized. The only
thing I can think of is maybe my httpd server isn't running.

I did "service httpd start", and got "httpd: service not recognized"

I looked under etc/rc.d/init.d/ and didn't find httpd

My question is how would I go about installing the service.

Or is there another reason why I can't access my server.

thanks

You need /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd script to start Apache. You can run it manually using
/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl start
to start it or
/usr/local/apache/bin/apachectl stop
to stop it.

So you know it's running and can't access it from any other machine?
Do you have a firewall? If yes, how does it look like?
