Apache: How do I use Postfix if I'm not a mailserver?

I,m just learning some cgi stuff, running Apache as
http://localhost. I am not running a mail server of any kind.

I am finding it difficult to understand what to put in mydomain
and myhostname. Most of these kind of terms seem to refer to
me being an SMTP server or something like that.

I tried changing these

$mydomain localhost
$myhostname nobody.localhost

and then stopped and restarted postfix. Or is it that I have
to run a mail server, and have a registered domain name, in order to
use postfix?

I'm feeling immensely thick yet again!
