Apache Auto Thumbnail generator

Ok Folks, this is how it goes...
I have a lot of Image Files (JPG Format) that we have taken with our digital camera. My goal is to get these thousands of pictures on my apache server, but don't care to create thumbnails and HTML markup for each month (as I devide each month into a new directory).

In a perferct world Apache would give a directory listing view, when a user enters a directory with 20-25 images a plugin? would rip out thumbnails for the files in that directory long enough for the web user to be sent a page where each thumbnail is a hyperlink to the full size image, these thumbnails would be destroyed later on, so I don't waste HD space on Thumbnails of each image.

Anything out there like this before I re-invent the wheel?
