Apache 2.0.55 Help

I just installed linux yesterday so I am very new. I'm having trouble installing Apache on this computer.

I am following the instructions located at the Apache website. I can't post the URL due to this forum's spam prevention feature.

The download was successful and the "httpd-2.0.55.tar.gz" file is on the desktop, but when I type the command "gzip -d httpd-2.0.55.tar.gz" I get the error "No such file or directory." What am I doing wrong?

Well, when you use the gzip command, are you in the same directory as the file? I mean, have you done "cd /home/username/Desktop" so that you are in the right directory?

And as a little aside - You could save yourself some hassle by installing Apache through apt-get or Synaptic (since I notice you're using Ubuntu) instead of compiling it yourself.
