Hi ,
I am not sure about the source of that error , but why you do not test out installing by using YUM ?

Does /usr/local/ssl exist and contain the OpenSSL libraries?

ok its solved.
for future readers
Quote:
the OpenSSL team will pretty soon release 0.9.8 as stable release.

However, currently apache 2.0.54 cannot be built with 0.9.8beta6, as
a pem.h-definition has changed. The OpenSSL-team considers this
renaming as a bug correction, so compilation of mod_ssl will
go on to fail.
there is a patch avilable for this

I still get the same error with 0.9.8

Stable version of Openssl OpenSSL 0.9.8 still get same error as above....

What gives?

Also is it to use MUCH to install all mods as shared.

It appears your patch worked, possibly they did not include in the distro of stable .8 huh?

Also had to fix a module problem that ldconifg did not fix for some reason
