Question Anonymizer Server Software, pls help?

Hi all,

I'd like to install a web based proxy server on my home computer, in the style of hide my ass / anonymouse.

It doesn't even need to anonymize anything, just pass through browser requests, incl. streaming of multimedia.

It's just that at one location I am forced to use a proxy server that blocks too many websites, so I need a bridge to my proxy at home. Of course on said location, hide my ass and anonymouse are also blocked, so I need to set up my own hide my ass / anonymouse server at home.

Could Squid be configured to provide webbased proxy server functionality like "hide my ass / anonymouse" or do I need additional or completely different software?

A VNC server would not be good enough solution for what I want, because any multimedia related web content would not be too slow.

At said location, I MUST use the provided proxy, without it, I have no internet connection at all, so configuring my browser to use my own proxy at home is useless, I really need a web based solution similar to hide my ass / anonymouse...

I'm not a Linux Server expert, but I'm not a complete Noob neither, I have some experience with LAMP platforms....

Help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi
I might have not understood your question:
anything against running for example your own PHProxy (+ Apache) at home?
Cheers

Nope, nothing against that! As I said, I got some experience with Linux Apache MySQL PHP, so if PHProxy is one of the options that can deliver, then I'd embrace it! The question: would that be sufficient?

Knowing the power of PHP I suppose it is quite able, hehe, but I'd like to have this confirmed before setting up my own Linux server (not running any at this moment) and spend time with configuring! I'll check out the PHProxy documentation right now.

If indeed PHProxy/Apache can do the same as "hide my ass" (that is: pass through all http requests) but without even doing anonymization, then indeed that's what I'd been looking for!

I suppose that for video streaming also some other protocols via other ports need to be passed through, right? PHProxy can do that? I'll look into it right away! Thanks for the tip! I used to program in PHP, so I do like the idea of a web based proxy written in PHP!

Just in case: are there other alternatives? Perl / Python is okay, complete apps (binaries/packages) are even better, since I got lazy and compiling adapting scripts are things I try to avoid if possible.

I checked a live demo of PHProxy on http://phproxysite.com/ and youtube movies worked fine, strangely enought they got streamed in JW Player. However, other sites (like crackle.com) won't work...

One of those movie sites complained about cross linking, that's a clear error message and I guess that's something that won't be possible to resolve, but many other movies on other sites wouldn't play neither... Could this be a PHProxy config issue or just the sites themselves that won't allow cross linking? I wonder...

For straight http proxying though, PHProxy works like a charm! I will use it until I find a better alternative. In the meantime, I'll read documentation and test it further.

Opinions and possible alternatives are still welcome.
