Angry AMD 64-bit System reboots when trying to play games.

I was wonding if anyone else had this problem. Everytime I go to run HL2 or UT2004 my system reboots or locks up. I can play games like BZFlag and run glxgears with no problem at all. Everything else on my system is fine, I just have no clue on what to do when it comes to get high-end games to work. My system status are below once:

DFI nForce 4 SLI-DR Mother Board
1 GB of Ram
GeForce 6600 GT 128MB
Fedora Core 4 x86_64

Question I have the lastest driver installed.

I have the lastest driver install and my computer still reboots. Is there an post that I should be looking for that can tell me to disable or enable an option?

The point of that discussion was that there's nothing wrong with the driver. It is the highly modified linux kernel included in Fedora core 4 that's the problem. Redhat has always had a nasty habit of patching the linux kernel in ways that will cause the Nvidia driver and other 3rd party drivers to break.

If you want my advice, use a distro that contains a completely unmodified linux kernel ( a vanilla kernel as it is called )such as Slackware. You can of course download the vanilla kernel source from here www.kernel.org and build it from scratch too.

I have never tried Ubuntu so I can't say how patched or unpatched the included kernel is. But since it is based on debian I suppose it is likely that the included kernel is pretty standard.

This is going to sound a little blasphemous

But do you have a copy of the WindowsXP 64-bit version?

Because it seems like it might be a hardware problem. When you run an advanced 3d-game it puts much more stress on the graphics card than other applications and if the cooling is faulty the system will crash. An other possibility is that your power unit is too weak and cannot deliver the needed extra power to the graphics card when playing an advanced game.

But we will only know for sure if you test with an other OS and the problem persists.

You know that could be the case, one of my friends was telling me that because those low end games I don't have a problem with. However anything along the else of HL2 or UT2004 reboots my system.

No that sound just fine, however sometimes manufacturers put low quality power units in their pc:s to keep the cost down. These low quality generators often can't deliver the power they claim.

Thats the thing, I mean it cost $25 for the case. I think I even remember one of my friends telling me my power supply suck, so I'll look into switching out the power supply.

Just to follow up

It's not the power supply because my friend let me hold his 500W. It's not the OS because I've installed FC 4 x86_84, Ubuntu x86_64 and Ubuntu i386. It must be the driver and my mother board because I'm able to play UT2004 fine under Windows XP. So I might just stick with it until an working driver is out.
