alsa and esd

hello,

my sound doesn't work, but as soon as i go to a terminal and type 'esd' (it hangs there until you close an application that is using the sound) my sound works... i know this is the sound daemon so.. shouldn't it be running already? what do i do to make this automated so my sound works on boot up?

thanks,
-sean
