Unhappy All _TV _Applications_Fail

I have the following Tv applications installed on my slackware 12: kdetv, tvtime, xdtv.
and 2 Tvcards :a Lifeview (which shows up as TV CARD 7130,TV Card WDM TV TUNER,Manufacturer :Phillips) and a Hauppage Win TV 38105 Rev B211(which I riiped out of an old PC)

starting kdetv from GUI opens with the following error
"Unable to grab video.
Video display is not possible with the current plugin configuration. Try
playing with the configuration options of the V4L2 plugin."

switching between Tv tuners uder video brings the same error.
starting kdetv on the command line brings:

ALSA lib control.c:909snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL
kdetv: WARNING: **************** PluginFactory: Error loading library kdetv_telex*****************
kdetv: WARNING: Error: libzvbi.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
kdetv: WARNING: kdetv is likely to be crashing soon...
kdetv: WARNING: MainWindow::setupInfraRed(): Lirc not available

-----
xdtv just gives me a green screen,

----

tvtime doens even start but gives me :

Running tvtime 1.0.2.
Reading configuration from /etc/tvtime/tvtime.xml
Reading configuration from /home/jeff/.tvtime/tvtime.xml
xvoutput: No XVIDEO port found which supports YUY2 images.

*** For some ATI cards, this feature may be found in the experimental

About 18 months ago I tried Mandrake free 2005 with the lifeview card and it worked just fine.(but I had to abandon it as it didnt play mp3,mp4 or any of my videos.

any HELP with be HIGHLY APPRECIATED.

Ridiculous, of course it did! You just needed the codecs.

So, I'm guessing you are using Slackware 12?

So it would seem you have v4l2 installed OK - check the documentation for this. The cards are detected correctly and the correct drivers are assigned. This leaved the configuration steps.

Check which card each program is trying to use.

Have you tried mythTV?

All _TV _Applications_Fail

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I am using Slackware 12.

actually the lifeviewcard is my main card its the 1 I tried first and so I thot maybe the card wasnt suppoted thats when i installed the hauppage WinTV card but it still shows the ssme stuff.

Yes I tried playing around with the V4L2 plugin settings (I tried various formats : jpeg,png... and the other numbers) but still nothing
----

"... did you enable YUY2 support for your cards?"
how do you enable that ?
--
"dmesg:
bttv found the Hauppauge, saa found the lifeview - but suggested you use an insmod option to get the right tuner. Did you do this?"
how do you do that also ?

Forgive me if my 2 questions are rediculously newbie (but that who I am , a NEWBIE) but I rally dont know how to do that ( I will surely research on that)

---
"Ridiculous, of course it did! You just needed the codecs."
yes I also learnt that 3 months later about that and by then I had already burried my mandrake disks (am working on getting 2008 DVD PowerPack tho, hope it will play TV, music and videos right out of the box )

Thanks again

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)
... you don't have a mySQL database. This is probably the fatal error.
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p...17feeaac0d000e

2008-03-25 22:10:10.249 No UPnP backends found
... UPnP = Universal Plug-n-Play.

Also do this with only one card installed. You main card should be fine:

this post has similar question but doesnt get an answer:

same as this :

Early morning googling and This post:
http://justlinux.com/forum/archive/i.../t-136236.html
seems to suggest there is come issue with the kernel or the modeprobe command, so ive downloaded kernels : 2.6.24 and 2.6.18.1 will try them out during the weekend

Thanks

no exactly , I want more of a true Linux/Unix distro without the "shades and blinders" something I can use to learn Linux coz I will be taking some Linux+ course soon and I need something I can play with while at the same time something that I can Enjoy when I need to unwind.
thats why I choose slack , I got it to play play all my media files ( mp3,mp4,wma,avi...) only problem is TV so it wud be a shame to throw it away (thats why am giving it every inch to impress me B4 I give it the boot).

am still stuck with
"WARNING: Error inserting i2c_core (/lib/modules/2.6.21.5-smp/kernel/drivers/i2c/i2c-core.ko): Invalid module format" tho

sorry for the late reply by the way , schools been giving me good run-around.

thanks

J

Hello ,
I made some progress and I thot I wud report.
to get over the

"WARNING: Error inserting i2c_core (/lib/modules/2.6.21.5-smp/kernel/drivers/i2c/i2c-core.ko): Invalid module format"

I installed the generic kernel. turns out the kernel I was using has all modules baked in so there was no need to modprobe some into it.

othot i still have the same Tv problem , othot this time I can scan , get channels and even tune into them problem now is the screen is black all the time. and of course the

"Unable to grab video.
Video display is not possible with the current plugin configuration. Try
playing with the configuration options of the V4L plugin."

with kdetv is still there.

and

*** tvtime requires hardware YUY2 overlay support from your video card
*** driver. If you are using an older NVIDIA card (TNT2), then
*** this capability is only available with their binary drivers.
*** For some ATI cards, this feature may be found in the experimental
*** GATOS drivers: http://gatos.souceforge.net/
*** If unsure, please check with your distribution to see if your
*** X driver supports hardware overlay surfaces.

with tvtime is also still there

earlier research suggests that I should change select "sis" in my xorg.conf or change video cards . will try that and also try using my nVIDIA card get report back tomorrow.

in the meantime any will be HIGHLY APPRECIATTED

thanx

J

Hello,

Thanx for reply sorry i took long to get back.

Anyway I solved it . tvtime, xawtv and xdtv all work.

After Going thru the Slackbook,Going over the intel linux setup page for my VGA card ,Googling for 11 hours straight, trio and error, and most painfull (Intsalling Slackware 12, 7 times and Mandriva PowerPack 3 times , on the same machine in 1 day )
Here is what I changed in my xorg.conf in my graphics card section.

Section "Device"
Identifier "82865G"
Driver "intel"
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
Option "XVideo" "true"
#VideoRam 65536
Option "DRI" "true"

EndSection

NOTE: be sure to change the name of the graphics card name under the screen section to "82865G" too unless you want to learn the hardway (like me, LOL)

And my VGA is an intergrated intel 82865G by the way not sis as i assumed in last post

kdetv tv still has problems it only brings sound when i select v4l as under video but no picture v4l2 gives me nothing no picture and no sound and still the error message "cant capture video...(whatever, whatever )...try playing with you v4l2 settings.

But thats I can live with, after all winning a Match 3-1 is not bad at all (but am still working on it though)

--------

1 ANNOYING THING THO IS THAT NO MATTER WHICH TV APP I USE THE PICTURE AND THE SOUND ARE NOT IN SYNC ( there is a delay of about 1 or 2 seconds in the picture) i figured since the sound is connected directly to my sound card and since its the picture thats behind it must have something to do with xorg.conf or something to do with video acceleration . PLIZ correct me if am wrong (but am working on that too) WILL START A NEW THREAD ON THIS.

hope this saves someone some swearing at the PC ,hair pulling , .....(The Man Up stairs knows what else).

thanx again for all the help Simon

J
