After Reinstall, My openGL programs give X error of failed request BadColor Invalid C

I reinstalled Nvidia
Made sure I reinstalled everything Xfree86, SDL, Mesa

My old code compiles.

For instance

G++ -g -o Dod Dod.o gl2ps.o `sdl-config --libs` -lGL -lGLU -lgltt -lttf -lm

works fine. The libraries are all there.

But, when I run the executable I get that bad color

X error of failed request: BadColor (Invalid Colormap parameter)

I don't remember it happening before.
What I re-isntalled was Mandriva spring 2007

Kernel is 2.6.17.5

I am really up the creek! I need to get my graphics progs working pretty soon.

I should have added that I get

Major opcode of failed request: 79 (X_FreeColorMap)
resource id of failed request: 0x2c0001

And also that I have edited the Xorg.conf file as instructed
in /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA-GLX-1.0/README bit.

Well, it seems that NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.06-pkg1.run is
the problem.

I downloaded the latest version from NVIDIA, but that complains
because the kernel was not compiled with the current gcc. So
I am now compiling the kernel from scratch. This will take ages, so shall post if this fixes the problem later.
