Adobe Read/Ubuntu

Hey there, I have this app installed and when I try to open my states tax return PDF the window appears and either holds for 2 seconds without displaying anything and crashes or just appears then crashes. What could be causing this and how can I fix this?

Also to mention, I can get Adobe to open up when selected in the menu but when I attempt to open the pdf it crashes. This goes for any pdf I attempt to open through it.

The PDF file I'm trying to use is one in which it has all the computing in it and does my state return. Wisconsin uses these PDF's and when you try to open it with anything else it tells you to only use Adobe and won't go any further.

The frustrating part is this did work a week ago, I did upgrade my components recently but how would that make a difference?

Also after getting the adobe flash plugin up and running in firefox, when I attempt to open through that, Firefox crashes as well.

I bet if you check with your state tax assessors office they will tell you it's made to run on Windows and maybe Mac.
I'd be surprised if they know what Linux is.

I have had very similar results with forms from government agencies.

Good luck.

In that case you need to tell us what you changed. And while you are at it, what distro are you using, and when you say that you installed something you need to tell us how you installed it.

I put in a new motherboard, processor, and ram, software wise I changed nothing. When it came to loading it I had it loaded through the Ubuntu Software Center. I'm currently running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.

So it's an interactive PDF file?

If so, maybe try a different PDF viewer?

Unfortunatly I have and every time I do it opens to the page telling me it needs to be opened with Adobe 9.

It also crashes upon opening ANY PDF file, not just the one from the state.

Ok, where did the acroread package come from (sources.list entry)?

Have you tried reinstalling it?

Yeah, I installed it and uninstalled it several times. I've installed it through terminal w/ the "sudo apt-get install acroread", I've installed it through synaptic, and I've even downloaded the deb and installed it. Every time it's the same problem.

Tumpster,

It might be helpful if you try launching acroread from the command line in a terminal session, and listing whatever output you get there. Often times, error messages will show up there, when nothing else is working as you might like or expect.

Nothing, I get no errors displayed in the terminal.

craig@craig-desktop:~$ acroread
craig@craig-desktop:~$

Those two lines I see, one when I start acroread and then when it crashes it goes back to the second line and blinks, awaiting a command.
