I can't open a pdf file in Acrobat by double clicking on it. I have installed acrobat reader. I have set the path, and i can execute acroread from the command line without giving the full path. I then went and did the mime type for acroread. This works when i have to open a pdf on the web, but not when i double click on a pdf file. When i double click, it still opens with gnome pdf viewer. And besides this inconvenience, when I close gnome pdf viewer, the application crashes, and the icons on my desktop disappears. Do mime types handle double clicking a file? It doesn't seem that way to me. Please Help Thanks

what desktop environment or window manager are you on? if using kde, open up konqueror and navigate to a directory with some pdf files. choose one of the pdf files and right click on it. choose edit filetype from the context menu. the main tab should have a frame where you can choose the application to open a pdf file with. either type in the command acroread or click the add button to search for the acrobat reader command as it would be in your kmenu. make sure the entry in the box is at the top of the list. then click the embedding tab and choose the radio button labelled something like, "open in seperate viewer". click apply and then ok. reload your konqueror file manager window and then try clicking on the pdf file. should open up in acroread. if you're using something other than kde, then you'll have to figure out how to set up the file type.

you can use gpdf which comes default with GNOME 2.x.

Check the "Control Center" (or something similiar used
by your distribution) and make sure the file association
is correct. On the console it uses PATH. On GUI, it uses
whatever defined by the contrl center.

Ok, maybe i wasn't clear, or maybe some of you have been staring at your computers for too long.

1.) Adobe works from internet or command line.

2.) I use GNOME

3.) I don't like the PDF viewers that come with with GNOME

4.) I want to be able to click on a PDF to open it using adobe.

5.) I went to control-center/files types and programs/documents/published material/pdf and set the mime type to acrobat reader for PDFs.

6.) It still doesn't work for double clicking, although it does now open with acrobat reader for a pdf on the web... whats the deal maybe this is a bug in fedora core 2. If anyone out there can get a pdf to open with Adobe acrobat by double clicking in GNOME and Fedora Core 2 let me know.

Got it to work, after adding the mime type, you must right click on a pdf file, go to properties, then your new mime type will be in the list, you can then select this as the default application Thanks for the replies.
