Adding to source.list denied

I tried to add to the Ubuntu repositories via:

/etc/apt/sources.list
And got this message:bash:

You need root privileges to edit that file.

you need to edit it as root, via sudo, i.e. "sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list". synaptic lets you edit it safely through it's gui too afair.

sources.list is not a program or script, so you can not start it, like you tried.
You have to edit it with a text editor. Also keep in mind that sources.list is a system configuration file, therefor you have to edit it as root-user. Try it with something like

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
for a GUI text editor, or

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
for a CLI text editor.

Just put that line to the end of your sources.list-file, then run

sudo apt-get update
Adding a key means that you will install a GPG-key to your system. All packages in that repository will be signed with that key. This is a security feature to prevent installing compromised packages.

By the way, you have to replace the word RELEASE with the release you are actually running, like lucid for 10.04 or maverick for 10.10.

You could do it through Software Sources. System > Administration > Software Sources. That will bring up the GUI for the sources list and you would add your new entry via the Third Party Software tab.

Because running

didn't install Opera nor was it in Synaptic.

apt-get update
doesn't install anything, it just updates the database of available packages. Please post the output of that command, so that we can see if all has worked.

What does this error mean? It sounds like something related to my problem here

Sorry, I forgot that you are using Ubuntu. You actually have to be root to run that command, so you have to run

That's how you do it, then when that is done you close it and it will ask you if you want to refresh or not, say yes you do (this is the exact same as sudo apt-get update). The you can open synaptic and find your new application and install it.

I deleted:

from the source file via gedit and added it to Software Sources, but got the following error ater closing the Apt line window and reloading:

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Failed to fetch http://deb.opera.com/opera/dists/karmic/non-free/binary-i386/Packages.gz  404  Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

@Advice Pro: You can just install Opera and the post install will add the file /etc/apt/sources.d/opera.list for you. No need to do anything by hand.
