Hi, I'm running Fedora 15. I am in China, so I use a VPN to bypass govt. blocks. I use Astrill. Astrill say their software has only been tested with Ubuntu. It installed ok in Fed 14.
In Fed 15, it is installed in /home/pedroski/Astrill. But it did not/could not install a menu item in Applications (Gnome 3 probably caused that). In Fed 14, it put an item 'Astrill' in Applications with submenu 'astrill, uninstall, and help'
At the mo, I have to start Astrill in a terminal, I get all kinds of funny messages, ie
[pedroski@fangshan ~]$ /home/pedroski/Astrill/astrill
[WARNING] Out of OEM specific VK codes, changing to unassigned
[WARNING] Out of unassigned VK codes, assigning $FF

ascache: no process found
iptables: No chain/target/match by that name.
iptables v1.4.10: host/network `2607:f358:1a:5:0:0:0:0:3213' not found
Try `iptables -h' or 'iptables --help' for more information.
....... but it works!
I would like to have an elegant launcher in the applications menu. How is this done??
Also, Network settings has a menu for VPN. Can I somehow put Astrill in there?? How would I choose which server??
Can you find an icon for Astrill in /usr/bin/? Do you have a /usr/share/icons folder and create a launcher app? If yes open your create a launcher in Name Slot put icon.png you want. In command slot put /usr/bin/Astrill executable you found. If you have a button on you launcher that says "No Icon" click it and choose an icon, then just put Astrill in the Name Slot.
I'm just guessing here, hoping for the best because I don't know you setup.. Let us know the results.

Hi Pedroski.
I am trying to install Astrill in Fedora 15. I've hit a brick wall. I think SeLinux is stopping my install. Could I be so brash to ask of you a step by step oh how you installed Astrill in Fedora 15. Please ...
And did you get 'the elegant' start up solution to work?
Thank you very very much.
EDIT: I got it installed and working.
Have you configured SeLinux or your Firewall at all?
Download the cli file, I think it is 'astrill-setup-cli' That works. It will install in your home directory, and place a link in your Desktop. You can then start Astrill in a terminal, or by clicking the icon. If you cannot see the icon on your Desktop in Gnome 3, you need to install 'gnome-tweak-tools' (something like that, I can't remember exactly) and just tick 'allow nautilus to manage Desktop' then you will see what is in your Desktop directory actually on your Deskop.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
You have to run the cli file in a terminal, you know that, right?
Yeah, I got it working. I had to enable the installer file to be executable by user (myself) by right clicking on it and setting it to writable as well as readable.
It installed without a hitch and appears to be working. My ip is masked according to the server I log into, so I assume encryption is working as well. I'm on the 7 day trial at the moment, just trying out speed etc.
But; I'm curious as to if I need to edit my firewall and SeLinux at all to enable some ports or something. I'm getting dreadful pings speed from speedtest.net. Between 250?? and 350?? approx. On my standard connection running an intel pro gigabit pci card I get between 25 and 35. So, through Astrill my pings are almost exactly 10 times slower.
Sorry but you're asking the wrong guy here, I am a Linux nitwit. I am glad when I get things to work, but I never understand quite why or how they work, or why they didn't before. A firewall is beyond me. SELinux is a book with seven seals. It seems logical that things will be slower with Astrill, because it routes through their server first. They do give tips to on how to speed things up, check their tips. I only got Astrill because, being in China, the paranoid govt. here blocks all kinds of things which to me seem innocuous.
