accented characters rendered as Cyrillic

Hi all,
I'm running Debian Wheezy (Amd64) with a 3.6.0-10.dmz.1-liquorix-amd64 kernel and a KDE 4.8.4-5 desktop. I use UTF8 as my default code rendering and my locale is LANG=en_GB.UTF-8.

My problem is annoying rather than life-threatening. In certain websites and certain applications, accented or non-English characters are rendered as Cyrillic (Russian) characters. This happens on all my installed browsers (Firefox, Konqueror, Opera, Chrome) which leads me to suspect it's a KDE problem rather than a specific app problem. For example it happens when I type in the search window of Grooveshark (http://grooveshark.com/#/). It also occurs on the Skype communication windows (the window that opens when you connect to another skype user) but *NOT* on the main skype windows (the one that lists your contacts).

Here is a partial list of substitutions.
What I type:
éèëöêô (accented characters)
What I get:
йилцкф (Cyrillic characters)

So, for example, if I type an ö the Cyrillic ц is what appears. I should emphasise that the problem does not occur on most websites; only a small percentage have it and only when using certain fonts.

Any ideas on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

Check the character encoding (Opera menu under Page, Firefox menu under View) and see if changing it helps. It may not be necessary to type accented characters: most sites will accept names with the accents left off.

Thanks David. No joy, I'm afraid. Yes, fiddling with the character encoding was the first thing I tried. No effect whatsoever on this problem. The problem isn't just entering data. As I said in my OP it's also in the display.
Thanks for trying.
ciao,
jdk
