A Whole Host of KDE Questions

I have several questions, and thought I'd stick them all together in one post, since they mostly relate to KDE.

1) I have just installed K3B. I have cdrecord, cdrao, transcode, cdparanoia, lame and vorbis tools/libogg installed. How can I get it to support mp3s? I haven't installed kdemultimedia (see question 2), but XMMS can decode them (I assume it has it's own decoder). When I try to play an mp3 it says "Unknown file format", and obviously it then fails on decoding audio when it tries to write

2) I cannot get the kdemultimedia package to install. It gives me these errors:

In file included from /usr/include/linux/cdrom.h:14,
from audiocd.cpp:79
/usr/include/asm/byteorder.h:38: syntax error before `(' token
/usr/include/asm/byteorder.h:42: '__u64' is used as a type, but is not defined
as a type.
/usr/include/asm/byteorder.h:43: parse error before `}' token
/usr/include/asm/byteorder.h:44: syntax error before `.' token
/usr/include/asm/byteorder.h:50: syntax error before `.' token
/usr/include/asm/byteorder.h:51: syntax error before `.' token
/usr/include/asm/byteorder.h:52: parse error before `:' token
cdconfigimp.cpp:82: parse error before `}' token
make[3]: *** [audiocd.o] Error 1
make[3]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kdemultimedia-3.1.4/kioslave/audiocd'
make[2]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kdemultimedia-3.1.4/kioslave/audiocd'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kdemultimedia-3.1.4'
make: *** [all] Error 2

I have heard that it's to do with cdparanoia, but --disable-cdparanoia as a configure option doesn't work, and cdparanoia has no 'make uninstall' option.

3) How do I get kdm to appear at startup? I have tried adding it to inittab in the following way. First I tried to get xdm to startup, by changing the default runlevel to 5, and adding:

x:5:respawn:/usr/X11R6/bin/xdm -nodaemon

to the end, but this didn't work. I assume that I would just have to change that line to reference kdm, but that didn't work either. Could someone please point me in the direction of a good tutorial/HOWTO on what does what when booting, or just tell me what to do?

4) If I just run kdm from the prompt, I get an error when trying to login. I can't remember exactly what the error was (sorry), but it happens with every user, and won't allow me to login. Is this because I am lready logged in as root in the console and am then starting kdm? Shouldn't it start in it's own virtual terminal? Perhaps this is something that the above question will answer?

5) Bash is configured nicely on my system (when I go straight to the console), but in KDE, when I start Konsole, it's configured completely differently. Where is the config file for this, and is it of the same format as the /etc/profile file (since I want all changes to be global)

6) And finally two non-KDE questions. I have installed Firebird and it renders fonts badly. I have installed the Truetype fonts and everything like that, and it looks lovely when it uses anti-aliasing, but it anti-aliases based on the X settings, and when it uses fonts which aren't set to anti-alias (10pt-15pt), they look terrible. I don't want to set alti-aliasing on all the time, because although this looks good in Firebird, it doesn't look good in any other app. How can I get around this?
<edit> I compiled it with xft enabled, but I didn't specifically enable freetype since I think it enables it by default. Could this be the problem?

7) My keyboard map sets <shift>-3 to be "sterling" (as it should be), but in bash, It appears as #<enter>. Has anyone come across this before? Anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks to anyone who even reads this annoyingly long post - I thought it better to stick all my questions together rather than posting 7 separate times - and greater thanks to anyone who can help
Guy

just the keyboard part :)

Hi Guy,

I had more or less the same problem with keyboard: I have a mac keyboard on a laptop and I had 2 "enter" and no "altgr", quite annoying!

To fix this in console go to /etc/console/boottime... and switch what you want, don't forget to back that file up before!

To fix this in X, you'll need xmodmap (or xkeycaps, a graphical front-end to it). this is what I have now:

keycode 108 = ISO_Level3_Shift
add Mod5 = ISO_Level3_Shift

you can get the keycodes using xev.

if you need more help, just ask for it!

(I'm sorry I can't help you for the other questions)
