[Udev] Can I delete the content of /dev?

Hi,
I think my /dev is a little overpopulated... So I recently installed udev.
But /dev is still as filled. Since udev recreates dev dynamicakky when I boot; is it ok to just rm everything in dev?

Thanks in advance

I'm not sure if that is the best idea. I am reasonably certain that you still need a few static entries ie: /dev/console to boot up. Which ones are necessary I cannot recall but I think there are 3 you need to have. I am not sure. In any event, if you want to try I strongly recommend backing up your /dev directory before you rm them. Just run "tar cf dev.tar dev" from '/' directory.

EDIT: I just had a look at the gentoo udev guide, and it would seem that all you need to keep for a successful boot is /dev/console and /dev/null

However, make a backup please...I don't want my advice to bork your system.

it's a little hard to say because i don't know about gentoo
basically keep
console and null as said earlier
and check with
ls -l
if you have links in there to the /proc filesystem leave those
and if you have mountpoints in there from fstab lke /dev/pts or dev/shm leave those as well

Ok,
Lokee go boom boom! Did an 'rm -rf /dev/*'...
Of course it was under single mode...
I then typed 'reboot'...
The machine froze; reset! And it worked!

Except that my dev is still as cluttered has before... Oh well; I guess it's normal...

I wouldn't sweat it. dev files take up next to no disk space anyway

Yep, I agree. Just stay out of that directory unless something is broken I always say.
