... tried the link and got a 0 byte file names sources.list :-(
You can simply copy/paste the content of your sources.list into a reply posting.
ok here is:
# Automatically generated sources.list
# http://www.ubuntulinux.nl/source-o-matic
#
# If you get errors about missing keys, lookup the key in this file
# and run these commands (replace KEY with the key number)
#
# gpg --keyserver subkeys.pgp.net --recv KEY
# gpg --export --armor KEY | sudo apt-key add -
When installing, you didn't use 'expert' or 'server' or 'server-expert' options?
I don't understand what 5 posts is for though.
I am still curious to know what commands you used.
the sources.list is good.
can you do
# sudo apt-get update
on a command line? What output does this command produce?
yes, the error is:

I have a similar problem under Debian that has got me stumped.
I found a simple work around is to ping the repository site from cli or go there with your browser eg #ping security.debian.org, or from browser http://security.debian.org
It only works for one repo at a time though so you have to edit the sources.list every time you need to do an apt-get whatever depending on the repo you need to access. www.apt-get.org has a great package search engine and lists repos for you so you can insert/remove repos from sources.list as you want
Its a pain but works as a temp measure.
I had someone tell me on a different post that it could be a DNS related issue, not sure how since all my other internet stuff works fine. Might pay to look into it though.
I will keep hunting and if/when i find a resolution i will reply back here.
thanks for links.. Some people told me that i have a Gateway problem, because i use a Router(Roper Wlan Fly Net, or similar) configurated on DHCP.. could be this the problem?
Router could be a problem, though i am not sure how at this point. I too am behind a router (Dlink 604T), but what is driving me mad is that apt and synaptic worked fine for several months, then just stopped being able to reach the repos. (Others reading this are screaming "you must have changed something!!!") But i had not touched a thing!
So DNS could be an issue but i am still trying to workout exactly how its an issue......
You could try using something like 'ethereal' to log all the info while synaptic trys to do its stuff and see if you can find the problem in the log, thats where i am going next.
I was out a few days, sorry. I don't believe that there is a problem with your routers.
APT is configured to access the server by http protocol. That means, that apt does nothing other than your web browser. I think this works.
Your apt-get update output says, that apt cannot connect to the server and stops trying after timeout. It cannot fetch the package lists, and complains about these lacking lists later.
What I believe is, that the configured servers aren't reliable. I experienced similar problems with some localized mirrors with a debian system.
You don't have to use the italian mirrors. Since they don't answer, you don't have a speed advantage using them I pinged the italian mirror and got no answer.
I suggest trying other servers in the sources.list. You can use apt-setup to reconfigure the server list, but I believe, that this tool just adds new servers to the list instead of modifying the list. I prefer direct editing the sources.list. Below you see my sources.list.
If you backup your original source.list, you don't have any risk.
