XML API for Cisco devices

I am managing some Cisco devices from a management server running Linux and would like to use the available XML API. I can get data in and out of the API, but I would like to avoid reinventing the wheel as I'm sure this is fairly common. Any information on how this is others are accomplishing this task would be greatly appreciated.
