www.domain.com replaced with IP address

Hi folks,

I'm new to DNS and servers, so apologies if this is a stupid question. I've registered a domain (let's call it domain.com) and have a VPS server. In domain registrar, I assigned my IP address @ and the domain registrar provides 2 nameservers. When I browse to www.domain.com, I can reach the site but the name is converted to my IP address (i.e. http://74.117.153.122) instead of leaving "www.domain.com". If I enter just "domain.com", it works fine (i.e. browser line remains "http://domain.com"). I tried setting up a DNS nameserver on my VPS but I'm not sure if I actually need one as the domain registrar provides 2 nameserver domains. How can I configure my server/domain registrar so that www.domain.com is not replaced by its IP address in the browser?

Thanks a lot! Go Linux!

It sounds like rather than the registrar set up a DNS record to point at your IP address, they've setup a redirect from the domain name to the IP address.

Alternatively, your web server could be set up to return a redirect to the IP address rather than serving the page at the domain-name, possibly a mis-configured virtual server. But Lordandmaker's suggestion sounds more likely.

If you run "dig www.domain.com" you should see exactly how the DNS entry is set up.

Solved

Hey guys,

Thanks for the input and prompt responses. Apparently, it was a way sillier mistake than anyone could have thought (obviously, I'm a complete newbie in this field). My browser had the initial wrong settings (forwarded domain) in its cache, so new settings were not reflected. I cleaned up the cache and everything works perfectly. Thanks a lot for the help anyway!!
