this means rsync could not copy over some files that it listed to be copied over before the transfer began.(most likely those files were deleted)

I simply copied the error warning and used google to look out for some possible reason and what I can see is a bunch of blogs explaining the reason. So I think you should also give a try and look out for the situation you are facing

here is one of them

Review

This Thread helped me to fix a silmilar problem. But the concreate solution is not descibed.

Maybe my description will help some people. Here is what I have done to solve the error with rsync.

My configuration
Samsung Netbook NC10
Ubuntu 11.10 Wubi Insallation
Desktop Unity

While using rsync in a migration script to move a Wubi Ubuntu installation to a new partition the rsync warning

Code:
rsync warning: some files vanished before they could be transfered (code 24) at main.
aborted the scipt and migration was not complete.
I supposed what was said before. Some files exists at the start of rsync an were stored in some kind of "copy table". While rsync start to copy these files, one ore some files are deleted. rsync could not find them and aborted with the warning.

This sounds for me like temporary files cause this failure. Because I was unable to identify the responsibles processes I desided to kill the whole "Unity" desktop and try the scipt in real textmode. What should I say. Bingo. No warnings the script was running perfectly.

This is not a solution for everyone because I had to reebot and start the recovery Mode.
Press [left SHIFT] while booting and select recovery mode in GRUB Menue (Ubuntu 11.10). Then start your processes in freedom.

Because I'm new in linux i can not offer a better solution but maybe there are experts who can help identify the processes for temporary files or developers find a way how rsync can identify temporary files and ignore them.

Regards Hans
