He mentioned slackware, so /etc/init.d/apache|apache2|httpd status wouldn't apply here.
And the default rc.httpd script in Slackware only has start|stop|restart as options in /etc/rc.d
To check the status in Slackware, you need to run /usr/sbin/apachectl status and the script uses lynx, so that must be installed. You can edit the apachectl script to use links but you also need to have server-status enabled in your httpd.conf file, which I tend to disable.
The other quick way to verify is just to do a ps and look at the output to see if httpd processes are running.
ps fax | grep httpd
Also the OP mentioned that apache is running, so I'm assuming they've already verified by other means.
