Web Servers don't want to show [larger] .tar and .rar files?

Hello,

I've encountered this problem on two very separate occasions - once with my shared hosting provider, and once with my VPS provider.

No matter what I try (renaming to a different extension, removing the extension altogether), the web server does not want to show .rar and .tar archives in folder listings. If I try to download the file by manually typing in the file name after the server URL, I get this error:

Code:
Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /Test.rar on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Is there something I'm missing here? Does some default setting need to be changed in the .conf files to allow these files?

My host runs Apache and I am running ligHTTPD on my VPS. both refuse to display .rar and .tar.

Also, I have noticed that smaller .tar files are allowed, I believe the limit is 2GB. Is there a limitation on the size of a file that a web server can host?

Anyone?

Imfamous 2GB limit

Yes, there is a 2GB barrier. I will call it a barrier rather than a limit as it can be overcome. Too many details to deal with here, so you will have to deal with your provider(s). Google apache 2GB and you will will get a sense of what it is about.
