Welcome to LQ!!!

What partitioning layout you have selected during RHEL install. If you have selected use all space or remove any partition and create the default layout then obviously all space is used.

What is the output of:

1
Code:
df -h
2
Code:
fdisk -l
If output of above command shows that all 40 GB is used then the error is obvious.

Would like to mention that RHEL is for commercial use and it is not free. So if you doing it for testing purpose then use CentOS instead. Infact you can go with CentOS 6 or CentOS 7 (CentOS 7 require 64 bit system with VT enabled to run under VMware).

Keep in mind that rhel5 is OLD
very old

5 is the LEGACY hardware Operating system .
It is GREAT if you have 10+ year old hardware

RHEL 5 ( the code base was LOCKED just before it's release ) was released on "14 March 2007"
so there is very little support for hardware newer than 2007 in rhel5

the current is RHEL 7.1
and it LIKE RHEL5 is NOT FREE

you really do need to buy the required support contract
a standard one year license is $299 USD per YEAR

or

install the FREE rebuild of the code
CentOS 7.0

Is your disk fully occupied? Can you add another disk to the virtual machine you are running rhel5 in or expand an existing one?
