virtual hosts and basic auth

Hi,
i have to configure some virtual host that share the same DOCROOT to be protected by basic http auth (Apache 2.0.x). There is 1 user configured who can access the documents but unfortunately this user has to authenticate for each virtual host again and again as they have different server names. Is there a way around this? Would be great if you let me know! Thanks!
j.

I've never tried this before but you should only need to setup a single VirtualHost if they're all going to share the same documentroot. Just use the ServerAlias parameter. You can setup your 1 vhost and simply specify multiple ServerAlias's to account for all of the different URL's that will be browsing to the site.

Since the htaccess password protection is Directory based and not URL based users "should" only have to authenticate once. Again I've never tried this but I don't see why it would prompt them over and over again.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately there are various environment variables set in the different vhosts with specific values so i can't use your concept. But maybe i'll find a way around that...
cheers, j
