I installed fedora 16, everything works fine except the vga. The problem is, when I use firefox or any other software, the scree moves like really slow, for example, when I try to scroll down from a firefox internet page, it scrolls down really slow. I am not sure how to explain it properly, but something about the graphics lags.
Would help to know which video hardware you use (also, are you using Fedora in a virtual machine) and if you use the drivers that came with Fedora or if you have installed other drivers.
Hi I am using a Dell Poweredge R610 server, and it didnt have any OS installed. I installed a fresh copy of fedora 16 x64. I am quite new to linux so I dont really know if fedora installed any vga drivers. How can I check what graphics hardware I have? thanks.
Servers often have only a small graphic card installed to get some output e.g. during installation. In your case the Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G200eW and it uses shared memory AFAICS up to 8 MB. If you want to use it as a workstation, I would suggest to install a recent graphic card. What resolution did you set up for the attached monitor?
Nevertheless we can check whether it loaded any driver for it:
MGA G200....it shouldnt be that slow, unless you are using big resolutions and 24/32bit colour. (IIRC the G200 is limited to resolutions smaller than 1280x1024 for 32bit colour).
I'd guess you are using gnome Fedora 17, does the G200 even run gnome-shell? If it is, try gnome-fallback, or Xfce/Lxde, or one of the lighter WMs.
IIRC mesa has dropped/is dropping DRI (direct rendering infrastructure) drivers as well, and that could be part of the problem.
Sorry about all the 'shoudlnt' and 'maybes'....its been a while since I've used a G200. The only time I seem to see them now in on servers, and most server users dont care about desktop GUIs.
I might have a G200 in my box of bits, I'll have a look and if I do own one, I'll test it out.
