usermod -p command


Hi,

I am trying to run, usermod -p <password> <username>
it is accepting. but when trying to login, password does not accept.

I have more than 200 users, whose password need to change. I have prepared password in the excel sheet. so wanted to copy and use.

Please help, how to change.

its not normal password..

it should be encrypted password

use crypt command to encrypt the password string
then user usermod along -p option to submit the password..

Hi Deepak,

you need to first get the hashing algorithm from login.defs .
and then using that hasing algo you can generate passwod .
this password will be accepted by the usermod -p command.

If you have mass changes to make, look at "man chpasswd."
