Tuning samba performance

Hi guys,

it's a while I'm using samba (cifs) over my home 100Mbit network to serve files to Linux clients (and a couple of windows ones too).

I'm trying to improve server performance.

Read performance is very good: I can read files from any share at a more than decent speed.

Write performance is poor and tends to hang the system: when I copy a big file to a slow share, the client system becomes unresponsive and stuck until the transfer finishes.

Any ideas on how to speed it up?

Thank you

Before you even consider changing any settings, you really need to take careful measurements of cpu, disk and network performance as well as memory usage, while performing known experiments. It's only after you do this than you can change ONE setting at a time and retake measurements. Going by 'feel' isn't going to be very successful.

Many times I've found that tuning isn't the problem - it's the network interface card (nic) that is the issue. Intel nics work best.
