telnet service and KDC resolve error

Hello all,
I have one problem when I try to connect to a linux machine from windows 2000 machine.
I have two different login names..
with one login name say "xyz" I am able to telnet to the linux machine..although I am getting an error..
"Cannot resolve network address for KDC in requested realm while getting...."
Now to the same machine but different login say "ABC" I am trying to telnet the linux box..but it throws the error "incorrect login" and "Cannot resolve network address for KDC in requested realm while getting....".

I am able to connect to the linux machine through PuTTY (SSH) with both logins..
can anybody explain the beviour..?

thanks..

Have you got Telnet-server installed on this box? This webpage that I just went through suggests..

http://www.unixguide.net/linux/notes01.shtml

By default the RH Linux server does not install the telnet-server package. When you telnet to it, you are connecting to the kerberized rlogin server. If you don't want to configure a kerberos domain and just want to install the plain telnet server, just install the telnet server package off the Linux CD/DVD and try connecting again.

SSH connections will work probably because the ssh-server package is installed by default.Ideally do not use telnet at all.SSH is a mmuch better alternative.

Cheers
Arvind
p.s....Post back if the problem is still not resolved...

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
I tried as you said but no change in the behaviour

and I pointed out one thing.
using some username the telnet works fine..
but it doesn't work for some user.

so I think it is very peculiar behaviour..isn't it..?
is there anything related to user configurations..?

thanks

Hi Arvind,
I got the answer..I got it through trial and error..
the problem was length of password..
if the password length is more than 8 char..the login failed..
so that explains the behaviour..for different login names..

but let me know if there any restriction of length of password for telnet..

bye nad thanks.

Good to hear you solved it...its strange though...if the same 8+ character password is going through when you ssh why should telnet fail?...Ill check this out at my end and let you know ...

Cheers

A general note on the
Quote:
"Cannot resolve network address for KDC in requested realm while getting....".
issue when using windows based terminal emulators.

This is caused by enabling the krb5-telnet & klogin services on the server (FC5/6 in my case) without setting up the kerbeos client correctly. In my case (lazy I know) disabling these services reverted to normal telnet behavior which resolved my problem.
