Post Software RAID and LVM incomplete detection

Happy new year to you all!

I was in the process of moving over to Linux Mint Debian Edition 201403 from Scientific Linux 6.5 but I have had a problem post install. As I am new to Debian based distributions I have spent a few days learning how to install configure most of the software I plan to use on my server but I overlooked one area - which is where I should of taken advantage of the live DVD. That area being my server hardware.
http://pastebin.com/EXEc1GuE

The server has 4 SATA disks. Each pair has a software RAID1 using up most of the disk, apart from about 22Gb at the start. Then I have one LVM spanning both RAID1's. The OS and swap is installed into the first 20Gb (+2Gb for the swap) of the first disk.

All installed fine and after the reboot I logged in and started to install my software.
Code:
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
$ sudo apt-get install openssh-server
$ sudo apt-get install mdadm dmraid smartmontools
The last one resulted in an error I hadn't seen before.
Unpacking mdadm (from .../archives/mdadm_3.3-2_amd64.deb) ...

This error I believe meant although mdadm was installed my RAID was not properly detected hence my /dev is missing the LVM I need to mount to access all my data.

I managed to find the package (firmware-linux-nonfree_0.43) which needed to be updated to remove the error.
https://packages.debian.org/jessie/a...nfree/download

So now the error does not appear when I install the package but still my RAID / LVM setup is hiding somewhere.

When I run these commands, nothing:
Code:
$ cat /proc/mdstat
$ sudo mdadm --detail --scan
From the Linux Mint Debian Edition mdadm.conf

Any ideas on how to detect the RAID array's, so the LVM is detected and I can mount it?

Question

From another forum:
http://www.linuxformat.com/forums/vi...=16847#p115980

Quote:
Backup the current mdadm.conf (just rename) then copy over the original mdadm.conf and reboot. Make sure those partitions are marked for LVM use!

PS: if you did it right, you have a backup of that data, right? If so, remove the entire LVM and start again.
PPS: do you use Webmin for admin-tasks? I've found when my PSU blew up earlier this year that an filesystem check (fsck) fixed the problem on my RAID5 setup.
Can anyone tell me if it is safe to copy in my original mdadm.conf.
What does it mean to have the partitions marked for LVM?
Asking if my data is backed up makes me think this is guesswork rather than a solution.
