smartctl


hi,
smartctl can be used only on physical server.from virtual machine is not possible to use anything to detect a hdd failure.right?
smartctl can be use only on a single disk.right?

You can use smartctl on the host OS.

so from a VM there is no possibility to check if a disk in a physical server is faulty.
in the link you gave me -it can bee seen single disks but not any raid.

Do you have software or hardware RAID?
For hardware RAID, it will depend on the the controller... It may also have option to detect & notify when disk is faulty - check the documentation.
For software RAID, you can add <MAILADDR> in mdadm.conf

obviously it depends on the configuration. Virtual hosts usually does not have access to physical devices but virtual ones (which are somehow mapped to real devices on the real host). Therefore VMs cannot see/reach/handle the real device, but again it may depend on the configuration.
VMs usually have no idea where is the "underlying" filesystem really located (if there was a hdd/nfs/raid/whatever involved).
