I apologize if this is not the right place for this thread. Basically, I have two computers running Fedora 16 Desktop Edition 64-bit at home. My primary computer is equipped with an Intel Xeon X5690 (12-core) processor. The second computer runs an Intel Core i7 980X (6-core). This computer is unplugged and has not been in use since I got the Xeon system.
I do statistical work using the R programming environment. Almost everything I do comes down to running large simulations. I use parallel computing to run the simulations using the 12-core system. I have openMPI installed. What I want to do is "add" the 6 cores from the i7 system to my primary computer. I don't care about adding monitors, keyboards, mouse etc. to the i7 system, I just want the additional cores to be somehow available to my Xeon system. I believe the Xeon and the i7 are based on similar architecture so I'm hoping this is possible.
I need to know what types of cables I'll need and the software I may require. Right now, I simply have each computer connected to my router via ethernet cables. Also, once the necessary connections are made, I would need some help on how to go about actually setting up and finalizing the system (i.e. what files to edit, the commands that are to be issued in terminal etc.). I tried Googling to find some help articles on this but I'm not quite sure how to go about it. I came across this site
http://www.webstreet.com/super_computer.htm but I want to be sure about what I would be doing.
