Unhappy Server wont start

Hi

My names greg, and I really need some big help. I have a dedicated server through 1and1 and can't get any support because it's dedicated and not a managed server.

Thus 1and1 support sucks and now I'm here. I'm a complete noobie at this and have no clue or idea what to do.

They say I can access my server through the Serial Console & fix it.
Heres what they say.......
*************************************************************
With the serial console you can still reach your server when the network is no longer available.
Also you can reach and change your server's settings even when your server does not boot up properly .

Log in to our console server using SSH. You can then log on to your server with your user name and password.

Console Server sercon.onlinehome-server.com
User name ********
Console Password *******
**************************************************************

I did this and get this error:

VFS: Cannot open root device "301" or unknown-block(3,1)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(3,1)
<0>Rebooting in 30 seconds..<4>No reboot fixup found for your hardware

I have no idea clue what to do to fix this. Could someone please help me. I don't mind giving user & PW info for you to log on and take a look.

P.S.
Pretty plzzz someone.... Anyone

Hi,

The first thing you have to do is not panic. Your thoughts will be distorted and you won't be able to think logically very well to solve this.

You may have a corrupt root partition, or maybe hard disk failure.
What you can probably due is reboot this machine as single user and run fsck to your root partition. Don't mount your partitions.

Run fdisk -l to see the list of partitions you have.
Then run fsck -y <partition name> - according to the output from the command above. Do this to all your partitions (except swap), and do it especially to your root ( / ) partition

Ask 1and1 how to reboot your machine through the remote console. There should be a signal that you can send through your keyboard (like Ctrl+something). But it depends on the type of remote console they're using.

Good luck.
