Samba4 - user & homes shares

Hi,

Messing around with Samba 4.2 on my Slackware 14.1 box and trying to set up a share with my Windows 7 (Home Premium).

I've been reading what appears to be conflicting information regarding the [homes] directive.

For all the *examples* I could find, the configuration used: 'smbpasswd -a someuser'.

Where 'someuser' has an account and a home directory on the Linux machine.

However, in the documentation for Samba4 'homes' directive, if I read it correctly, I don't need to do this (add a user through smbpasswd)? Samba will scan the Linux system passwd file for the user and set up a share to the user's home directory assuming a valid login id? Or are they referring to the Samba password file (tdb)?

Kinda confused here...

Thanks kindly for anyone who takes the time to read and provide insight!!

Samba Shares

squeeze71,

As far as I recall, you have to add the user as a samba user (smbpasswd -a <username>), otherwise the user would have no access to the samba shares. The username and password that you create with the command will need to be used from any other machine wanting to access the samba share. An easy guide to how to configure samba is found here: http://www.tomsitpro.com/articles/li...t,2-777-2.html

Just my two cents,

FBobbioC

Yep, it worked!

I also searched the registry for the LmCompatibilityLevel key and set it to a value of 2, it was originally 3. I also tried different settings for Home, Public and Work networks as I was led to believe these can affect the authentication process. It's currently set for "Home" btw.

I may return the LmCompatibilityLevel key to a value of 3, as I read that Samba4 plays much nicer with recent versions of Windows, so handling NTLMv2 shouldn't be a problem.

Regardless, I will make one change at a time and report back with what I find!

Thanks again for the 2 pennies, well worth it imo!!
