Question Running more than one server for website

Hello,

Could someone point me towards how more than one server is used for websites that get a lot of traffic? Forgive my ignorance if this is something simple.

And does anyone know a general figure of visits per day where one server starts to run into problems? I'm not sure if we need another server or just some optimization somewhere...maybe just setting up MySQL on another machine.

Our site uses apache2, php5, and MySQL 5.

I'd like to add a few details:

It's a dedicated server which has been crashing lately, due to memory problems...even though the server has 3.5GB RAM. Also, I commonly noticed "MaxClients reached" in the logs (it's set at 75) and sometimes when this happens the website can't be reached until I restart apache, although the server is still running fine.
