Ping size an dpacket loss

The size of a packet includes eight bytes of ICMP header data. So the explanation is that the smaller size allows for the eight bytes while the larger size does not.

Ping has a maximum size of 65535 bytes but the data is smaller because of the 8bytes of header info.

Packets as large as you are sending are invariably fragmented so are subsequently broken down into many packets. Normal size for the packet is 65 bytes (default).

I am curious why you are sending such a large packet, usually large ping packets are used for DOS (denial of service). Perhaps the pingee has lowered that 65K size to 32K in their firewall to avoid DOS. Who knows. However really large packets are useless for estimating time intervals.

Hope this helps.
