Unhappy Proftpd hangs during boot - Debian Lenny

Hi, I have a new Debian Lenny installation which starts proftpd at startup.

After restarting the machine, proftpd hangs without any error messages. I cannot access a shell because the boot sequence hasn't been completed so i cannot provide any logs or disable proftpd from starting.

Can anyone help with a solution or have any ideas how to get into my server without it being able to boot properly?

At the grub bootloader, boot to single user (add a 1 to the end of the kernel boot string) and use Debian's init management tools to stop Proftpd from loading in the default runlevel. Then boot as normal and try to start Proftp manually to see what messages it yields.

Some distro specific information in follow up to Dudydoo's instructions:

There should be an entry in the grub menu to allow you to boot into single user mode.

Once booted you can disable proftpd from automatically starting with:
Code:
update-rc.d -f proftpd disable
Cheers,

Evo2.

Ah! Thanks evo2, I couldn't remember the actual command off the top of my head.
