Priorities for disk transfers

Has anyone implemented the equivalent of "nice" but for disk transfers instead of the cpu use? Such a feature may not exist in the linux kernel but have people found ways to implement the equivalent?

The context is that of suspending or resuming vmware VM's. Unimportant VM's should do it slower if important ones are currently doing it.

I use it (ionice) all the time.
It is provided by the util-linux package, I believe.
