Poor performance running Ubuntu on Hyper-V

I'm using a gen2 Ubuntu 17.10 VM on Hyper-V running on Windows Server 2016. The performance has been poor to the point of being unusable. There's not a lot else going on in the host and the VM is consistently writing a lot of data to it's VHDX file. Every time I increased the dynamic memory limit the memory demand increased to meet it. Changing it to use static memory seemed to help a bit but it's still much slower than I'd expect.

Has anyone else seen similar issues?

Windows....

Can you try to setup the following:
1. Host system Linux
2. Guest system Linux, too

"gen2 Ubuntu 17.10 VM " What is that? Did you get a virtual appliance in Hyper-V format or did you create or convert it?

I'd have to assume that your server fully supports virtual technology.

Generally I create a vm that is more than the minimum hardware requirements for a distro. You can add in more than that and it should run near native speeds.

Look to performance metrics on both host and client.

Hyper-V has generation 1 and 2 VM types gen 2 allows for things like dynamic memory and the ability to hot add and remove certain virtual hardware.

Definitely has more than minimum requirements, definitely not near native speeds.

Create a new client and test it.

How did you get this VM? Why do you say it has more than enough resources to run the client?

Use performance metric programs on both client and host to see where load might be.
