Question Plesk?

Hi,

I am using a dedicated ubuntu server, which has been installed for me by the hosting company. It has Plesk installed (or had), but I have always configured my domains/virtual hosts manually, so I have never used it (frankly I am still not sure what Plesk does exactly and what it is for).

Now it seems that I at some point did mess up (kinda tried to install Zend Loader end ended up replacing my apache webserver with zend server and had to reinstall apache). Plesk was removed incompletely and now I have to reinstall my server with a clean installation for it to have a consistent state.

Now the question is: should I get Plesk installed again or not? What exactly is it for? Setting up virtual host? Anything else? Any pros/cons?

And this is my first post here, yay

Hi,

First of all I suggest you to switch distribution, if stability is an issue for you then I think you will have big improvements getting a stable distribution (Debian, Slackware) among the others.
Plesk is used to manage your server in a simple way, where I would say fast more than simple, I would use it if I had multiple servers (10-30) but if you don't use it it's just pointless to install it

Alright ... I don't think another distribution is an option where I currently host my server - which is hosteurope.de. They have ubuntu and windows. I had ubuntu on my own server before than one, so never considered anything else, but now that you mention it, it would probably be smarter to have a more stable distribution, which I would't have to upgrade too often. For now I think I will stick with this one though.

I only have this one server - with about 24 domains on it. I am considering to buy another server for testing etc, but that will be it for now. So seems like I don't really need Plesk, if I have done without it so far. Was justing considering if there where any cons I haven't though about.

Maybe it could be easier for others to manage their domains with Plesk, if I used my server for hosting domain for others?
