Please help when used YUM in RHEL 5.8 64bit

Hi all,

I tried used YUM to install the necessary packages for Oracle installation.

I used RHEL (redhat enterprise linux) 5.8 64 bit.

Before, someone edited YUM configuration file (I did not know where !!). And now, when I run any commands with YUM (ex: yum install ..., yum update ...., yum list ...., ), I received same error message:

-------------------------------
Loaded plugins: product-id, rhnplugin, security, subscription-manager
Updating certificate-based repositories.
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: rhel-x86_64-server-5. Please verify its path and try again
-------------------------------

Please help me to resolve this problem !!

My /etc/yum.conf had contents:

---------------------/etc/yum.conf-----------------

[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
keepcache=0
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
distroverpkg=redhat-release
tolerant=1
exactarch=1
obsoletes=1
gpgcheck=1
plugins=1

# Note: yum-RHN-plugin doesn't honor this.
metadata_expire=1h

# Default.
# installonly_limit = 3

# PUT YOUR REPOS HERE OR IN separate files named file.repo
# in /etc/yum.repos.d

Thanks.

Hi Chris,

From /etc/yum.repos.d, i have file with name is public-yum-el5.repo. Some contents look like:
-----------------
[el5_latest]
name=Oracle Linux $releasever Latest ($basearch)
baseurl=http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleLinux/OL5/latest/$basearch/
gpgkey=http://public-yum.oracle.com/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle-el5
gpgcheck=1
enabled=1

[el5_ga_base]
name=Oracle Linux $releasever GA installation media copy ($basearch)
baseurl=http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/EnterpriseLinux/EL5/0/base/$basearch/
gpgkey=http://public-yum.oracle.com/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle-el5
gpgcheck=1
enabled=0

[el5_u1_base]
name=Enterprise Linux $releasever Update 1 installation media copy ($basearch)
baseurl=http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/EnterpriseLinux/EL5/1/base/$basearch/
gpgkey=http://public-yum.oracle.com/RPM-GPG-KEY-oracle-el5
gpgcheck=1
enabled=0
...
-----------------

I tried to yum list gcc, my console appear:
-----------------
Loaded plugins: rhnplugin, security
el5_latest | 1.4 kB 00:00
el5_latest/primary | 13 MB 00:10
el5_latest 10974/10974
Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: rhel-x86_64-server-5. Please verify its path and try again
-----------------

Now, I solved this problem. The root of cause is when use YUM CLEAN ALL, it deleted repomd.xml. I copied 2 files: repomd.xml and primary.xml.gz from other server to /var/cache/yum/rhel-x86_64-server-5, and it work again.

Regards,

Make sure that your internet connectivity has no problems.
And do this :

URLGRABBER_DEBUG=1 yum check-update

Check the debugging output..
