PHP on Mandriva question

Im reasonably new, Linux 6 months and I just decided I wanted to learn PHP. NVU however doesnt interpret it in the preview window. I added PHP to my system too.

/usr/bin/php /etc/php.d /etc/php.ini /usr/lib/php /usr/share/man/man1/php.1.bz2

Browsing to a saved piece of php code doesnt seem to work either.

I can fire the file into my domain name space and of course the code is interpreted but I want to do that on my home machine. Do I have to install a server???? I dont really want to dig myself deeper holes.

Any help much apreciated. linux/PHP newbie
