NIS vs Local account password change

Hello,

Changing a local user account tries to change the NIS account. Why?

I have a NIS server provided by a Sun machine and about 30 RHES 5 clients. On the NIS server I have a sybase user. On 2 or three of the machines for reasons of security I have a local sybase user. I have the /etc/nsswitch.conf file set as follows:

passwd files nis
shadow files nis
group files nis

When I try to change the local sybase password by "passwd sybase" I get the following error

"RPC: Server can't decode arguments
NIS password could not be changed"

Why is it even trying to change the NIS password and how do I stop it from trying. The account is local.

Thank you for your help.

I checked it out and nope. my yppasswd and passwd are distinct and I even tried yppasswd and that wasn't happy either, different issue though.

Thanks
