NIS server in data center

Hi,
I want to set up an NIS server. I can do this on a old pc, and turn it on 24/7. But i'm afraid that will bring me a high energy bill.
That's why I want to lease a server in a data center. But is this possible with NIS, or is it that a NIS must always in the same network as the clients? If this is true, how i can solve the problem?
