Need guidance on how to setup separate PCs for Webserver, MySql and Email server.

Hello:
I was looking for guidance on how to setup my own webserver at home.
Was wondering what would it take to try to setup a few machines behind my router. One machine (what I have now Ubuntu) as a Web Server, another machine running MySql, and a third machine running an email server. I wanted to see if I could setup 3 separate machines independently, but have only the webserver talk to the router to return requests to the outside world, but have the MySql server only talk to the webserver and the email server only to to the webserver as well. (i.e. protect those 2 machines from the internet. I know I can have these 3 servers running on one machine, but I wanted to implement and practice the webserver running on a different box from the MySql server. Should I be using NFS between the 3 machines to talk to each other? Also any suggestions on any small distros that I can install on a seperate lower powered Machine to run MySql and Email servers on? I read an article in one of the Linux Mags that explained how I could setup a static IP via one of the free DNS.org sites. But wanted to see if I could pull this off with three seperate machines behind my firewall. Any links or info would be helpful. Thanks

It depends on the front end application you will place on your web and queries on your DB. Read LAMP

Thanks.
Anything specific on Lamp? Like diagrams and such to describe the general flow?
