Need a guide to putting stock kernel on centOS 5.5

I can't find a working guide to putting stock kernel on my CentOS 5.7 box.

Can someone guide me into doing it.

I also would like to know what repos are best when doing it.

Thank you.

Usually when people say "stock kernel" (or "vanilla kernel") they mean getting it directly from: http://kernel.org

Here is a great info/how-to page: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel

For most users, the default CentOS kernel from the default CentOS repos is "best." What is your specific problem/question/issue/concern with the kernel CentOS has provided?

The current one is "static" and made by my server host.

It is having problems with just iptables.

I think the current kernel is 2.6.38.2-grsec-xxxx-grs-ipv6-64.

It does not have everything you need to run a web server or something :P

First command on the guide and getting:

Code:
Error: Missing Dependency: kernel >= 2.6.9-11 is needed by package systemtap-runtime-1.3-9.el5.x86_64 (updates)
Error: Missing Dependency: kernel-devel is needed by package systemtap-1.3-9.el5.x86_64 (updates)
Error: Missing Dependency: kernel >= 2.6.9-11 is needed by package systemtap-1.3-9.el5.x86_64 (updates)
Going to try and skip them.

A good first step is to check whether you are running genuine CentOS:

http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/OtherSpins

I don't think you are.

My emphasis added:

Quote:
We are not mind readers and do not know every way that a downstream vendor might modify a basic CentOS installation. We DO know, however, that a novice administrator, such as one unfamiliar or unwilling to use the command line, unwilling to read the documentation (man and info pages) or who will not use the CentOS provided management tools, can EASILY break a working installation.

/!\ Please: consult your vendor's support channels first.
Contact your hosting company for assistance with your non-genuine CentOS system.

Unmanaged service.

I can do most things on servers but anything to do with kernel I step away from.

I guess I have to do some now

If your hosting plan does "not have everything you need to run a web server or something" (whatever that means) then explain to them you are not satisfied with their service, and demand to get what you paid for (or upgrade to a service that will please you).

As default it has my host's repo servers.

Should I change them to cento's and see if it will yum kernel?

This topic is extensively discussed in the CentOS documentation I linked to earlier: http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/BrokenVserver

Since you claim your hosting company provides no customer support whatsoever (I find that hard to believe) and CentOS devs/forum will not support your non-genuine CentOS... My recommendation is to create a new linuxquestions.org topic with a descriptive title such as "opening port 3306 on a CentOS-based virtual server."

Beyond that I can't really Support you with a product that is not Supported by the vendor.
